Anna Airy
Anna Airy was born in Greenwich on June 6th 1882. She was a British oil painter, pastel artist and etcher. Airy was one of the first women officially commissioned as a war artist and was recognised as one of the leading women artists of her generation.
She began her artistic studies at the Slade School where she trained from 1899-1903. Airy not only won the Melville Nettleship Prize in 1900, 1901 & 1902 but also all of the prizes available at the Slade School. The artist mastered a variety of different mediums including oil, watercolour (as can be seen here) & etching.
Anna Airy made her debut in 1905 at the Royal Academy & continued to exhibit there until her death. She displayed more than 80 works in all at the Royal Academy.
The Royal Society of British Artists held an exhibition in 1952 to honour Airy & her great talent.
Works by Anna Airy feature in the collections of numerous museums & dignitaries including H.M. the Queen, the British Museum & the Victoria & Albert Museum.
