Stan Price

Stan Price was a professional artist & a highly regarded member of the Nottingham Society of Artists for over 50 years.

Price started out at the Nottingham School of Art where his skills developed quickly under the watchful eye of the eminent painter, Arthur Spooner. He then became a lithographic artist, working in both Southampton & Leicester, in the late 1930's.

During World War II he served in the Home Guard & then went on to enlist with the Royal Engineers in late 1944. Price was posted to India with the 72nd Base Map Reproduction Station where he was stationed in Risalpur in northern India. During his off-duty periods he painted a number of watercolours, predominantly in the Kashmir region which he found particularly inspiring. He also enjoyed depicting temples & mosques. Upon his return to England the artist held an Indian exhibition at Beeston Library in December 1947.

Stan then commenced work as a comercial artist with P.P.Payne & Son Ltd where he worked until he retired in 1976.

Stan Price joined the Nottingham Society of Artists in 1947. He went on to become Vice-President of the society in 1955 & was then elected as President in 1978.

At the peak of his powers he exhibited at the Royal Institute of Water Colours in London & came very close to being accepted as a member. Another prestigious event occured when he was commissioned, alongside Fred Glover, to paint two murals for the Linear Accelerator Unit at the Nottingham General Hospital. The subject was a lively Goose Fair scene.

Price won the prestigious Silver Palette Award in 1986 for the best single entry in the annual exhibition run by the Derby Museum Art Gallery.

Stan Price enjoyed a long retirement & never lost his love of painting, continuing well in to his 80s. He died in 2001.
