Lawrence Buttigieg
Buttigieg (born 1963) lives and works in Malta, practising both as artist and architect. He studied at the University of Malta, California State University and Charles Sturt University. The figurative works of Buttigieg are a balance of physical form and feeling; he penetrates the character of the person and focuses on the inward reflective qualities. In the painting process he slips his view of the model between the layers of paint. Over the past seven years a recurrent theme of his paintings has been the female body. Through his nudes he explores questions of identity and representation. Buttigieg is also a landscape artist. In his landscapes the Mediterranean environment, with is strong colours and sharp contrast of light and shade, is easily discernible. His paintings are characterized by the expressive use of light and colour. In the works of Buttigieg land, sea, sky and human form are simplified and transformed to subtle orchestrations of colour and defined brushstrokes. His colours are the colours of life, rendering likeness and personal stylisation inseparable.
