John Ambrose was born at Brierly Hill, Staffordshire in 1931 & educated locally. He was interested in painting from an early age & carried out his art training in the West Midlands, much influenced by D. A. Chatterton of Plymouth. Following a number of holidays & painting visits to Cornwall, he rented a cottage & studio at St. Ives, where he lived for more than 30 years. Since 1992 he has made working visits to Venice. He has exhibited at the RSMA since 1985 & at the ROI (1989), & was elected RSMA in 1990.
Ambrose is known for his impressionist paintings and is popular with collectors all over the world having held exhibitions in 1981, 1982 and 1983 in Germany where he has a strong reputation. John Ambrose has a strong presence in the West Country, particularly Cornwall where his paintings have been sold in the “Best of The West” auctions at W H Lane & Son, Penzance as well as through Cornish Art Galleries.
John Ambrose died in 2010.
